Roman seeks to disappear. He decides that he’s going to need his death. He wants to die so impersonally it will cause him to vanish. Everything in his life feeds that goal. He grows obsessed with a man who'd disappeared twenty years earlier without being photographed. The suicides of two acquaintances become areas of close study. Eventually, thinking he has found a perfect way to disappear, he tries to prove it by dying in a manner so spectacular it will erase his death.
