Close to You
Dominic Savage
Fiction : 100' / Trans, Trauma, Family, Disability

For his father’s birthday, Sam sets off on a journey that he doesn’t necessarily want to do. Sam hasn’t been home since his transition. After four years in Toronto, where he lives within a community that he feels a part of, this comeback to his hometown means having to face unsolved emotional tensions. The family context awakens unresolved wounds and an old flame triggers memories and feelings yet to be explored. Very connected to Elliot Page’s story, Dominic Savage directs this movie which brings us the needed representation of trans people. The stories of Sam/Page are transversal to many (too many perhaps) in the LGBTQIA+ community, where the search for a place to just be implies breaking away from a past that doesn’t want to be reminded, family contexts that don’t want to be revisited because they’re responsible for traumas that take a lifetime to overcome. Close to You premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and, after London (BFI) and New York (NewFest Pride), it's coming to Queer Lisboa for us to see up close. D.P.
