Gus Van Sant

Gus Van Sant (Louisville, Kentucky, USA, 1952) is a film director, screenwriter, painter, photographer, musician and author. Influenced by painting and experimental cinema, he started shooting in 1981 and worked in an advertising agency until producing his first feature film, Mala Noche, in 1985. With recurring themes such as homosexuality and subcultures, his work is considered essential for North American independent cinema of the last quarter of the century.
