A documentary drawn upon a series of interviews to several contemporary Portuguese Drag Kings, directed in the setting of the creation process of the show KING SIZE (2025), by Sónia Baptista - a co-production of the Teatro Nacional D.Maria II and Festival DDD - a project that researches the performativity of masculinity in a queer context.  

 

* The screening will be followed by a talk with filmmakers Raquel Melgue and Sónia Baptista, and invited Kings.

Sónia Baptista completed the Contemporary Dance Performer Course at Forum Dança. She earned, with distinction, a Master's Researcher degree in Choreography and Performance from the University of Roehampton in London. Her training was complemented by several dance, music, theater, and video workshops. She writes dramaturgical texts for other creators and choreographs for film, video, and theater. She has published eight books. She has collaborated with Fórum Dança, Eira, FOR, ESD, ESTC, and the University of Minho. She is a visiting professor at the University of Évora and an Associate Artist at AADK Portugal.

Raquel Melgue was born in Porto in 1985. She lives and works in Lisbon. She is a mixed-media visual artist whose work spans photography, video, and performance, and has been presented nationally and internationally since 2007, the year she was selected for the AIAS Prize of Honor in Zurich, Switzerland. Her career is defined by interdisciplinary collaborations with other artists. She holds a Master's degree in Visual Arts - Digital Intermedia (2012) and a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts - Painting (2007) from the University of Évora. She collaborates with the Kindred Spirit gallery. Since 2016, she has created videos, visual materials, and stage spaces for Sónia Baptista's plays.
