Twilight Ladies
Alain Soldeville, Alexe Liebert
Documentary : 11' / Sex Work, Trans, Community

In the 1950s, Singapore’s transgender community began to settle in the Bugis street area. Attracted by the street reputation as “the Montmartre of Singapore”, tourists and sailors from all over the world came to enjoy themselves until dawn, sometimes being seduced by trans women dressed like divas. In the early 1980s, an urban renovation project planned to demolish the area.

Alain Soldeville embarked in the early 1980s on a two-year trip to Asia and Australia. He made his first photographs, and began a series on Bugis Street, the now-demolished, world-famous Singapore home of the transgender community. Returning to Paris, he became a photographer whose work has appeared in French and international publications.

After studying Cinema Theory at the Sorbonne University, Alexe Liebert developed a practice that combines the esthetics and techniques of fiction with documentary writing. Combining film, photography, sound design and installation, his work questions reality and its levels of representation.
