The Visitor
Bruce LaBruce
Fiction : 101' / Explicit Content, Migrations, Sexuality, Family, Politics

Bruce LaBruce suggests a re-reading of Pasolini’s Theorem (1968), in which the Italian filmmaker draws a ferocious critique to the bourgeoisie. Terence Stamp played the “visitor” who seduced each member of a family and, upon parting, left behind an existential emptiness in each one of them. In LaBruce’s re-interpretation, the “visitor” is a black male refugee who arrives at the margins of the Thames, naked, inside a suitcase. Inside this British fortress against migrants, the enigmatic and sexually fluid stranger shows up at the doorstep of an upper-class family. He seduces the maid who, to keep him close, introduces him to the family as her nephew, and he is hired to work for them. The “visitor” seduces and has sex with the mother, father, son, and daughter, plunging them into a sexual delirium painted in blue and bathed in fluids, promoting incest as the ultimate revolutionary act. By the end, the father gives name to this revolution, when he tells the “visitor” that “You colonised the coloniser”. Eventually, each family member undergoes a spiritual and sexual transformation, upon the sudden parting of the “visitor”. J.F.
